School History
Fonwood Early Childhood Center was established to meet a critical need for early childhood education in Houston’s northeast area. The campus was established in the year 2013 to serve students in HISD by offering a nurturing and academically rigorous environment for Pre-K learners. Since its inception, Fonwood ECC has focused on fostering foundational skills in literacy, mathematics, and social-emotional development to ensure school readiness.
Originally part of the North Forest area, Fonwood has become integrated into Houston ISD and has evolved into a vital educational hub for the community. The school emphasizes family engagement, community partnerships, and inclusive instruction, serving a diverse student population—primarily African American and Hispanic—with 100% qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Under the leadership of Principal Shanedra Burkhalter, a former teacher at the school, Fonwood continues to uphold its mission of excellence in early childhood education.
